Background of the Study
Traditional oral literature forms a cornerstone of cultural heritage for many Nigerian ethnic groups, including the Igala. Igala oral literature, comprising proverbs, folktales, and epic narratives, offers invaluable insights into the language’s historical development and cultural context (Okwu, 2023). These oral texts preserve archaic linguistic forms, idiomatic expressions, and stylistic conventions that have evolved over centuries. Scholars argue that traditional oral literature can serve as a primary source for historical linguistic analysis by providing evidence of language change, socio-cultural influences, and contact phenomena (Okafor, 2024). Despite the rich potential of these sources, systematic studies that integrate oral literature with modern linguistic analysis remain sparse. Recent research suggests that leveraging traditional narratives can significantly enhance our understanding of Igala’s historical linguistic landscape (Eze, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate the reliability and depth of traditional oral literature as a tool for historical linguistic analysis in Igala.
Statement of the Problem
Although traditional Igala oral literature is acknowledged as a valuable linguistic resource, its systematic use in historical linguistic analysis is underdeveloped (Okwu, 2023). Many existing studies focus on literary and cultural aspects without fully exploring the linguistic data embedded within these narratives (Okafor, 2024). The lack of standardized methods to analyze oral texts further limits their utility in reconstructing language history, thereby hindering efforts to document and revitalize Igala.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it bridges traditional cultural practices with modern linguistic research, offering a method to document and analyze Igala’s historical language forms. The findings will benefit linguists, cultural historians, and language preservation advocates by providing a richer, more nuanced understanding of Igala’s evolution and promoting the use of oral literature as a scholarly resource.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to traditional oral literature in Igala and does not extend to other forms of cultural expression or languages.
